The manga “Cells at Work” (author: Akane Shimizu, published in Kodansha’s “Monthly Shonen Sirius”) anthropomorphizes cells, and its innovative and unique setting has become a hot topic. It started serialization in 2015, was adapted into an anime in 2018, and has recorded over 10 million copies in total series sales.

Now, this work is being adapted into a live-action film by a stellar cast and crew representing Japan. The movie “Cells at Work,” set inside the human body and described as the “smallest story in the world,” will be depicted on the largest scale ever seen in Japanese cinema and is set for a nationwide release in December 2024.

Mei Nagano, known for her leading roles in the movie “Teasing Master Takagi-san” and the drama “Because You Gave Me Your Heart,” among others, will play one of the cute protagonists, a red blood cell striving to become a proper red blood cell and deliver oxygen to various organs within the body.

The other protagonist, a white blood cell (neutrophil) that protects the body alongside the red blood cell by eliminating bacteria and viruses that invade from outside, will be played by Takeru Satoh, who has recently garnered attention for his roles in the drama “First Love” and the movie “If Cats Disappeared from the World.”
